How to wash your dog

A dog should be bathed two to three times a year to remove all the dirt and nasty odours and to allow its skin to breathe. But what’s the right way to bathe your dog?

First, gather the things you’ll need to have close at hand: a plastic cup, dog shampoo and conditioner if your dog has a long coat.

Choose an appropriate spot; if the weather is good, you can wash your dog outside. If he’s not too big, a baby bathtub will do the trick. If you wash your dog in the bathroom, be sure to put a non-slip mat in the bathtub to prevent him from slipping or scratching the enamel. And put a plug in the drain to catch the loose hair.

Pour in a bit of water and start by wetting the front legs and then the hind legs. Move slowly, a step at a time, so as not to startle or frighten your dog. Thoroughly wet the rest of the body from the tail to the back and lastly the head. Calmly reassure your dog the whole time and praise him if he seems stressed.

Dilute the shampoo with a bit of water and lather it on the coat. Start with the back, the legs, the tail, and slowly and gently move to the chest and the belly, as they are sensitive areas.

Once your dog is saturated with shampoo, rinse him by lifting up his hair to reach the undercoat. The water shouldn’t be warmer than 38°C (a dog’s body temperature) or it could be bad for his heart.

Once the water runs clear, let him shake himself and dry him with multiple towels so he doesn’t catch cold. You can let him air dry in a warm area or dry him with a hair dryer (if he doesn’t mind the noise) with the heat set to minimum so as to not burn his skin.

Don’t forget that there is more than bath for a good pet hygiene. Cleaning your pet’s ears and eyes frequently is also very important. Discover the full FRONTLINE PET CARE range to take care of your pet : shampoos, ear cleaner, tick remover …

Why is grooming important for my pet?

You might think grooming your pets is just to keep them looking good. But it's also about maintaining your pet's physical health.

Grooming helps to remove dead hair, dirt, tangles and dandruff. While you brush, the natural oils spread through your pet's fur, leaving the coat with a healthy sheen.
